Vikes Opening Weekend

Vikes Opening Weekend

UVic Vikes

The University of Victoria Men’s Hockey team opened the 11th BCIHL season at home against the Trinity Western University Spartons.

On Friday evening the event was hosted by Vikes Nation at Ian Stewart Complex and sponsored by Maude Hunters Pub. The Vikes players along with Vikes Nation members advertised the game on campus during the week raising the awareness of the hockey team and the home opener.

The University of Victoria President Jamie Cassels and Clint Hamilton Director, Vikes Athletics & Recreation attended the opening ceremonies dropping the puck to start the 2016 – 2017 BCIHL season. The Vikes Players and Staff would like to thank President Cassels and Clint Hamilton for participating in the Vikes home opener.

The Vikes would also like to recognize Vikes Nation volunteers and staff for their hard work in supporting the home opener along with Maude Hunter’s Pub for its sponsorship.

The event was well attended with approximately 500 people at the game. The fans were treated to a very good game with the Vikes winning 4 to 3. Coach Schamhart ; “It was a good win for our young team to start the season. We work hard and have very good goal tending. Vikes goalie Scott Legault turned in another very strong performance stopping pucks at the right time, giving the Vikes the chance to win.”

On Saturday evening the Vikes took a 2 nothing lead but took some undisciplined penalties that allowed the Spartons back into the game. Vikes Assistant Coach Stephen Simonis explained the Vikes are young and need to learn, at this level players need to be very disciplined for 60 minutes to give us a chance to win.

The Spartons scored the 3rd and winning goal on a power play at 9:24 in the 3rd. The Vikes worked very hard for the last 10 minutes with numerous chances to tie the game.

The Vikes are on the road this coming weekend facing the Eastern Washington University Eagles down in Cheney Washington.
