2-1 Shootout Victory for the Vikes!

2-1 Shootout Victory for the Vikes!

Saturday night’s home game against Trinity Western University was full of excitement - a thrilling start to the second half of the BCIHL season. The game ended in a 2-1 shootout win for the Vikes as Patrick Holland found the net on the Vikes third shootout attempt.

The first period was an excellent start for the Vikes as Holland scored the first goal, assisted by Shawn Mueller and Kyle Bird. Bird’s defensive zone play was also noticed, with his fierce skating and excellent defensive zone puck control. Shane Kumar proved to be a great pickup for the club, with his presence stirring up the Trinity Western Spartans in the first two periods.

At the end of the second period three audience members got the chance to shoot from centre ice in order to win a gift card courtesy of Speedy Auto Glass on Douglas Street. Caitlin Dyck, Rachel Harrop, and Peter Bytcanek all had three shots to score a goal in one of three holes in the Vikes net.

The third period went well for the Vikes, and goalie Zack Wear continued to stop all shots that he faced. “The boys rallied around me to shut down our defensive zone, and that is something we can expect to see more of the rest of the season” Zack said. The third period was cut two minutes short with a stoppage in play when a Trinity Western player was injured in front of the Vikes net. The stoppage lasted for 50 minutes before the officials and coaches agreed to end the game with a game-deciding shootout. Trinity Western had three players shoot on net with no avail before the third Vikes shooter Holland scored, securing the win. The Vikes are back in action this weekend with a long road trip to Eastern Washington University on Friday, and a tilt against the 2016 BCIHL Champion Selkirk College on Saturday.
