Vikes Split Weekend Series Against SFU

Vikes Split Weekend Series Against SFU

UVic Vikes

The University of Victoria Vikes hosted two games this weekend on Friday and Saturday evening at the Ian Stewart Complex against the Simon Fraser Clan, breaking a four-game losing streak Friday but taking a hard loss on Saturday. The Vikes took their 5-4 win Friday night in overtime after rallying together and fighting hard against the Clan. Saturday’s game however was a tough blow to the Vikes after losing 5-2 while missing a good portion of their team.

The Vikes took to the ice strong in Friday’s game scoring the first two goals in the first period while the Clan quickly came back with two of their own goals. Sadly the Vikes lost one of their own to a player misconduct call on Kyle Bird and was left to push Patrick Holland on the defensive. The Vikes fought hard and went back and forth with the Clan until tying the game up 4-4 heading into overtime. On Saturday, the Vikes had a huge shortage of players due to injuries and the misconduct call on Kyle Bird, but still managed to string together to get the first two goals in period one. During the second period the boys lost energy and the Clan pulled ahead with their first goal, and then in the third period with the next four goals. The Vikes fought hard but in the end had lost their best defensive player and just didn’t have the juice to put another win in their column.

On Friday the all stars Patrick Holland and Brandon Volpe each scored two goals for the Vikes, while Kyle Bird was named in two assists along side Liam Shaw, Braeden Cyra, Austin Seamen, And Landen Matechuk. Shawn Mueller was responsible for sending the Vikes to victory when he scored the winning shot in overtime. Saturday’s goals came from Landen Matechuk and Shawn Mueller, with assists from Henry Hart and Matthew Adams.

Vikes goalie Zack Wear let in 4 goals on 45 shots and made the saves he needed to give the Vikes a chance to win. The Clan’s goalie for Friday night was Jordan Liem who also made a fair amount of saves 29 shots on net by the Vikes. Saturday evening Vikes goalie Michael Fredrick made several big saves sparking his team with the Clan having 30 shots on net. The Vikes matched shots on net with 33 shots against Clan goalie Lyndon Stanwood.

“This week we worked hard in practice and focused on supporting each other,” said head coach Harry Schamhart. “I think it showed tonight, the players supported each other for the first time this year. It showed when Bird took that 5 minute penalty, guys were blocking shots and laying their body in front of slap shots, doing everything they could to kill that off.”

With both the win and the loss Uvic is sitting in fourth behind TWU who is one point ahead, SFU who is two points ahead, and Selkirk College who is in first with 12 points. The UVic Vikes are set to play Trinity Western University on Saturday, November 12th for a single away game. The game is set to start at 12:30p.m. at the Langley Events centre.
